Heart = 4-chamber pump (2 atria + 2 ventricles)
- Made up of ~2-3 billion cardiomyocytes
- Location: center of chest cavity
- Directed inferiorly, leftward, & anteriorly
- Right ventricle = most anterior portion
Circulation: pumps blood through 1-closed system
- Veins: bring blood to heart
- Arteries: take blood away from heart
- Atria empty into corresponding ventricles
- Blood flow: right atrium => right ventricle => pulmonary artery => lungs (pulmonary circulation) => pulmonary veins => left atrium => left ventricle => aorta => body (systemic circulation; arterial then venous system) => inferior/superior vena cava => right atrium [circulation repeats…]
